ESCO Manufacturing Earns OSHA SHARP Award

Watertown, South Dakota—ESCO Manufacturing, Inc., received their one-year renewal of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Safety and Health

Achievement Recognition Program award for establishing and implementing an exemplary safety and health management system.

ESCO Manufacturing designs and constructs signs for a nationwide commercial market as well as signage for the church/school market. Their specialties include channel letters, custom steel and aluminum cabinets with pan, poly, flex, and routed aluminum faces for outdoor advertising signage.

After initially receiving recognition in June 2007, ESCO Manufacturing again met criteria for safety and health standards in September 2009, according to the South Dakota State University Engineering Extension Office, an OSHA-funded consultation program.

The Watertown company is now exempt from OSHA programmed inspections for one year. To qualify for SHARP status, a company must:

* Undergo complete and comprehensive safety and health audits;

* Correct all hazards identified by the consultant;

* Implement and maintain an exemplary safety and health management system; and

* Lower company lost-workday injury and illness rate and total recordable case rate below the national average.

The SHARP award exempts the company from OSHA compliance office inspections for a period of one to three years after receiving it.

“A SHARP inspection is a very rigorous activity for a company to undergo,” said James Manning, program director for South Dakota OSHA Consultation through SDSU Engineering Extension.

“Their occupational accident and illness rates must be below the national average to even begin the process of SHARP application,” said Manning.

Under the OSHA-funded Consultation Program for South Dakota, administered by Engineering Extension, smaller private-sector businesses can receive assistance in complying with Federal OSHA regulations without cost and fines or citations. Engineering Extension also administers the SHARP program.

“We congratulate ESCO Manufacturing, Inc., for the hard work and dedication its management and staff put forth in developing and implementing a strong and effective safety and health program that meets strict OSHA requirements for the SHARP renewal process,” said Jon Puetz, SHARP coordinator for SDSU Engineering Extension.
