Grenald on Effecting Human Behavior by the Use of Lighting Design

Raymond Grenald

Ray Grenald is an American Institute of Architects (FAIA) Fellow, Past President, founding member and Fellow of the International Association of Lighting Designers (FIALD) and a Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society (FIES). He is currently Chairman of Grenald Waldron Associates and serves on the Board of Directors for the National Lighting Research Organization.

Grenald will discuss his unique personal design philosophy, which evolved from a sensitivity to the human perception and behavior response to the physical environment (especially the visual environment).

Thursday, May 29, 2008. 2-5 p.m.
Dr. Alan Laird Lewis, O.D., Ph.D.
Visual Basics of Lighting Practice: What & Why We See When We See Light

Dr. Alan Laird Lewis, O.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Lewis links interactions between the environment, visual performance and how it ultimately effects lighting performance. He is past president of the New England College of Optometry, is an IESNA Fellow and currently serves as the Executive Director of the Lighting Research Office/Electric Power Research Institute. He has served on numerous Society committees, including RQQ, Photobiology, Nomenclature and Lighting for the Aged. He served as President of IESNA, the U.S. National Committee of CIE, and The New England College of Optometry. And in 1991, he served as Dean of the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University.

Lewis’s presentation will speak to visual acuity and contrast sensitivity, the “dynamic range” of vision and how it’s used in lighting design, and understanding the role of glare and aging in lighting requirements.

Thursday, May 29, 2008. 2-5 p.m.
Peter Ngai, PE, FIESNA, LC
Ngai on Luminaire Optical Design with Emphasis on the Visual Experience-A Primer

Peter Ngai, PE, FIESNA, LC

Peter Ngai is VP of R &D, Innovation & Technology for Acuity Brands Lighting. His contributions to lighting theory and application include Equivalent Sphere Illumination, Nearfield Photometry, Solar Illumination, Computer Rendering for Lighting, Brightness and Glare Research, and Lens and Reflector Optics. Ngai led the charge to bring indirect lighting to interior spaces in America, and was instrumental in introducing the T8 and T5 lamps to the American lighting industry. Peter holds numerous patents in lighting design and collaborates with and manages projects in lighting research and education at University of California at Berkeley and Cornell University In 2003, Ngai was inducted into the Architectural Lighting Hall of Fame as a “Living Legend.”

Ngai will speak to the fundamental principals of optics, luminaire optical design techniques, and how optics can be designed to address the functional, aesthetic and emotional needs of visual experience.
