Xlab 2013: Experience Design and the Internet of Things

As we move inexorably toward the Internet of Things—where every object from commercial airliners to toaster ovens is connected to the Internet—how will experience design respond? How can we migrate toward seamless and responsive physical environments and
create an Internet of Places?

SEGD’S Xlab 2013—October 24 in New York—will present a wide spectrum of perspectives on Experience + Interaction in Public Space. We’ll hear from:

Mark Foster Gage, Yale University and Gage / Clemenceau Architects, who Surface magazine called “The Architect of the Future” for his firm’s avante-garde approach to integrating technology in architecture.

Laura Kurgan, Spatial Information Design Lab, Columbia University, whose work explores digital mapping, the ethics and politics of mapping, and the visualization of urban and global data.

Anthony Townsend, Institute for the Future, New York University, whose research focuses on the impact of new technology on cities, the role of technology in economic development, and the Internet of Things.

J. Meejin Yoon, Höweler + Yoon Architecture and MIT Architecture, who directs a multidisciplinary design practice operating in the space between architecture, art, and landscape. Yoon sees media as material and its effects as “palpable elements of
architectural speculation.”

David Benjamin, The Living, Columbia University, an architect and professor whose work unites synthetic biology with architecture to create dynamic, living structures. He repurposes existing materials and structures in ways that subvert their original purpose and redirect them toward sustainability.

Sam Stubblefield, NBBJ Studio 7, an experience designer with a focus on branded environments, transmedia storytelling, and exhibit design.

Anthony Vitagliano, Digital Kitchen, who directs creative campaigns that leverage technology and strategic insights, but believes content is first in building strong brands.

“We all know the Internet of Things is developing fast with mobile communications technology, but how are experience designers progressing with the creation of the Internet of Places?” asks Clive Roux, SEGD CEO. “At Xlab, we’ll be hearing from a diverse group of people about different ways designers are embedding technology in the physical environment.”

Xlab 2013: Experience + Interaction in Public Space will happen October 24 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, New York. SEGD’s innovation and technology event will focus on how public spaces are being shaped by digital communications, immersive experience design, and enabling information retrieval in the built environment. Xlab 2013 is a vibrant addition to the 2013 Archtober line-up in New York City.
