Digital Signage Comes to Central Pennsylvania

State College, Pennsylvania—On Friday, May 15, both Original Waffle Shop locations in State College—one each at N. Atherton Ave. and W. College Ave.—unveiled forty-six-inch LCD screens that will broadcast a twenty-minute multi-media loop integrating video and flash animation. Content includes restaurant trivia and a focus on the quality ingredients used at the venerable establishments.

The digital signs were created via a partnership between State College-based JLS Creative Solutions (the creative content provider for the JLS Digital Signage Network) and Link Computer Corp. of Bellwood, Pennsylvania. Justin Shaner, the founder and chief creative officer at JLS, sees great potential in the emerging medium of digital signage. “In the State College market, we plan to develop a network of digital signs, providing businesses with reasonably priced advertising which customers can use to help make their buying decisions directly at the point of purchase,” he said. “We’re proud to offer our expertise in the emerging digital out-of-home advertising industry to our clients.”

According to Shaner, digital signage offers advantages to advertisers that other mediums simply can’t match. “I believe our partnership with Link will create great value to local businesses looking to break away from more traditional media outlets that can be less effective and more difficult to measure in terms of success,” he said.

Justin Holt is the director of the video/photography division at JLS Creative Solutions. According to Holt, the project presented a number of challenges he and his team were eager to meet head on. “The Original Waffle Shop tasked JLS Creative Solutions with creating content that was not only informative, but entertaining for their guests,” he said. “Our team produced a short video that takes the viewer on the journey from fresh produce being delivered to being presented as a meal.”

John Dimakopoulos is the owner and operator of both Original Waffle Shop locations and is really happy with the results. “Everything was done very professionally, and the JLS crew really paid attention to what I wanted out of the project,” he said. “I’m very hard to please, but everything for this project was very nicely done. All of our customers are excited.”

Shaner sees the success JLS has had with digital signage as being tied to exceptional graphics work and location, location, location. “Where JLS brings value and return on investment to our clients is through our strategic screen placements and highly innovative graphic content unique to our client’s message,” he said.

Dan McBride developed the distinctive look and feel of the Original Waffle Shop’s digital signs. He serves as cinematographer and video editor at JLS. “We took their established brand identity and worked off of that as an overarching theme for the project,” he said. “We tried to make the signage entertaining, and part of that was the development of the integrated ‘fun facts,’ which children as well as adults can enjoy while waiting in line.”
